Reiki is a subtle and effective form of energy work using spiritually guided life force energy. This practice originates from Japan where the word Reiki means “Universal Life Energy” (Rei stands for “Universal Life” and Ki for “Energy”. The practice is based on the teachings of Mikao Usui.

Eastern medicine systems work with this “energy”, which is believed to flow through all living things and it is vital to our well-being. The Energy is known as “Ki” in Japan, “Prana” in India, “Qi” or “Chi” in China and many people that practice yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Gong and use acupuncture are very familiar with the concept.

Reiki is a holistic system for balancing the mind, body and soul to help rejuvenate and restore positive energy. It is a great tool for stress reduction and relaxation and is now practiced in many hospitals and medical care settings, complementary to traditional medicine.

To help understand better Reiki and how it works, our practitioner Sonia, shares a simple yet powerful exercise:

“Visualise a free flowing river. This beautiful river is like energy flowing easily down through the body. Occasionally a pebble or even a rock will fall into this river, making the flow of the water a little more difficult. These pebbles are human worries, fear, anger and grief” – and so it is with energy within the human body. Energy flow can be obstructed so much that at this point physical pain may be experienced. The need to let go of these obstructions is essential for our healing and spirituality. Reiki is about tuning in with this energy and helping its free flow to overcome emotional and physical obstructions.

Important: Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice. It is not massage nor is it based on belief, hypnosis or suggestion.

What shall I expect during a treatment?

A consultation will take place during an initial session to discuss any particular problems or issues you may be experiencing. It is also an opportunity to determine what you hope to achieve from treatments and for the therapist to explain what will take place.

The session is usually 60 minutes long and the treatment time 45 minutes. You will rest comfortably on a massage table, unlike massage therapy, no articles of clothing are removed, apart from your shoes. We recommend wearing loose and comfortable clothing.

The session can either be hands-on, where you Reiki Practitioner will apply a light touch during the session, or hands-off where they will hold their hands slightly above your body. This preference will be agreed during the consultation.

During the session your therapist will be moving through specific standard Reiki hand positions beginning at the person’s head or feet. You may feel a warming sensation or a tingling during the session or nothing at all but sheer relaxation. The session should be very pleasant, relaxing and invigorating.
