Sports massage earns its name from targeting injuries that are specific to sports, whereas deep tissue massage is more specifically focused on chronic muscle tension and stress reduction. Sports massage involves the manipulation of soft tissue to aid recovery, prevent injury and enhance the performance of the person engaged in regular physical activity. Soft tissue is connective tissue that has not hardened into bone and cartilage, and it includes skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. Sports massage is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue through a combination of STR (soft tissue release), trigger point release, stretching and other massage techniques. To enable the therapist to do deep work, wax based products will be used instead of oils. Sports massage is only provided by sports massage therapists, advanced clinical massage therapist and physiotherapists.
